Intermarkets Awards $5,000 Journalism Scholarship
Vienna, VA (PRWEB) August 2, 2008 -- Lisa Sharp, a recent graduate of Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, was awarded the $5,000 Intermarkets-Lucido Journalism Scholarship in mid-July.
Intermarkets CEO, Kevin Lucido, created the scholarship to recognize an outstanding graduating high school senior in Virginia who would be majoring in journalism and who understands and promotes the importance of non-biased journalism in the United States media. The Northern Virginia Community Foundation (www.novacf.org) manages the scholarship.
Applicants were asked to submit an essay, writing samples, extracurricular activities and academic accomplishments. The selection began in April 2008.
Sharp was chosen from 13 applicants. "We were looking for someone with her skill level, background and journalistic pursuit," said Lucido.
Sharp was the business manager for DCHS Yearbook and her yearbook advisor gave her the paperwork for the scholarship. She also wrote for her high school newspaper and was a Teen Correspondent for the Virginian-Pilot during the past year. During her tenure, she did interviews, research and wrote articles.
"I was very excited when I found out I won the scholarship. It made me feel like I could actually do a good job. I felt very accomplished," said Sharp.
Sharp will be attending Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, VA this fall and will major in communications. "I've always liked to write," she said. "I'd like to work in newspapers or magazines."
